Happy New Year
As usual for The Manchester Chorale, December was a busy month with scarcely time to rehearse.
We started on the 8th December with Navidad Nuestra in Didsbury Baptist Church. We must have got something right because it was a full house and everyone was full of praise for a very varied Christmas concert. Said local Ian: “Passion, energy. Very real experience that I felt a part of.” Our Spanish singing was on top form and the percussion section made it very exciting.
Next up was The Christmas Spectacular in The Bridgewater Hall to another full house. An exhausting night in which we sang 25 pieces, it was showtime with great soloists, stunning dancers and a very competent conductor, John Rigby, fronting the Manchester Concert Orchestra. We sang all the Christmas songs that you know a few lines from that have become popular over the years, from Judy Garland to Slade to Chris Rea. As the promoters say: “It’s the ultimate, unmissable Christmas party.” And it was!
Our final gig was on Christmas Eve in The Bridgewater Hall again for the Christmas Carol Singalong. Conductor/pianist Jonathan Cohen was on top form and got the most out of us, the orchestra and especially the audience. He actually gets them into a state of frenzy at times – it’s amazing what music can do.
So now we’re into a New Year and a new repertoire beckons, together with some Chorale favourites retained. We’ll be performing The Armed Man with Sir Karl Jenkins again at The Bridgewater in March. Church concerts are planned in Cawthorne and Hawkshead where we’ll get to sing our new stuff. We also have a trip to Kent planned in May at the invitation of the Kent Chamber Choir who visited us last year.
This year is The Manchester Chorale’s 40th Anniversary and we have kicked off a Composition Competition. We’re looking forward to singing the top entries.
See the Events Calendar for details and dates of future concerts.
And by the way, the world shortage of tenors continues. If you are a decent tenor and can sight read reasonably well, then we have a place for you. Get in touch here. You don't need to sing as well as this guy! |
